The Recap: October Edition

It’s recap time! In this blog, we look at the top Amazon news in October 2020.

AMAZON’S PRIME DAY 2020 WAS A WIN-WIN FOR SMALL BUSINESSES AND CUSTOMERS

Prime Day 2020 was designed to provide Prime members with amazing savings, while at the same time also supporting small businesses by helping them connect with more customers and grow their sales.

Prime Day 2020 was a huge success for small businesses and resulted in record-setting sales by independent sellers. In the two weeks leading up to Prime Day, tens of millions of customers spent more than $900 million. Then, on Prime Day, independent third-party sellers had their two biggest days ever, surpassing $3.5 billion in sales – most of these were small- and medium-sized businesses. That is a nearly 60% year-over-year increase!

The top-selling product categories for this year’s third-party sellers included bedding, wireless accessories, nutrition and wellness, arts, crafts and sewing, and health care.

AMAZON CELEBRATES THE HUMAN SPIRIT IN ITS 2020 HOLIDAY CAMPAIGN

Grab your tissues, this one is a tear-jerker of the best kind! Amazon released its 2020 holiday campaign, which tells a beautiful and inspiring story of a young ballet dancer that continues to train and practice her craft despite the challenges of this year.

The ad follows a powerful story of a young ballerina whose dream of dancing a lead role is cancelled due to COVID-19. This does not hold her back though. She continues to practice her routine non-stop throughout the year. Inspired by her resolution and resolve, her sister and the community around her pull together to give her a stage and an audience in an emotional finale.

“Our holiday campaign is inspired by, and pays tribute to, the unbeatable human spirit and the power of community that we have witnessed so often this year,” said Simon Morris, Vice President of Global Creative at Amazon.

WHAT’S HOT ON AMAZON: A KEYWORD ROUND-UP FOR OCTOBER 2020

‘Tis the Season

Customers have started to get into the holiday spirit already! Searches for Christmas holiday items are gradually increasing, showing you that it’s never too early to start preparing for Christmas. “Christmas decoration clearance,” sits just outside the top 10.

Doggy Treats

There are many dog-related terms in the top 200 list for this month. These include: “dog bed,” “dog toys,” and others. This could be due to the puppy boom, which happened during Covid-19 lockdown and people want to treat their dogs.

Trick or Treat

COVID-19 cancelled so many events in 2020, but it appears that Halloween wasn’t one of them. The majority of the top 100 terms last week were related to Halloween. It was pretty clear that people were still celebrating Halloween in the midst of a pandemic, shopping for “Halloween decorations,” “Halloween costumes for women,” “Halloween candy” and “Halloween movies”.

Pandemic Priorities

Health and wellness is still a big trend for 2020 and customers are still being smart about their lifestyle choices. This category continues to soar on searches with “N95 masks,” “disinfectant spray,” “face shields” and even “yoga mats” all in the top 200.
