In September 2018, Amazon launched its eCommerce business in Turkey, representing Amazon’s first European launch outside the European Union (E.U.) market. Turkey has a population of nearly 80 million, which represents a notable expansion for Amazon, boosting its revenues in the region. Amazon executives have a seven-year investment road map for Turkey, investing tens of millions of dollars in its first year.
Before the launch, customers were able to use the international site and could buy certain items from international sellers; however, this often meant long delivery times and hefty shipping fees. Turkish customers now have access to millions of products, over 12 categories including baby, computers, electronics, home and kitchen, books, fashion, office, toys and games, sport and construction goods.
The platform is open to Turkish sellers who are now able to open a local merchants account. Amazon began exporting products from Turkey to Europe in June, opening the door for Turkish SMEs to sell products in dozens of categories to customers in 28 countries across Europe, including the U.K. and Germany. To help SMEs take advantage of that open door, Amazon Turkey is partnering with the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) and Boğaziçi University to offer e-commerce training to SMEs in Turkey.
Amazon.com.tr also represents an opportunity for sellers to sell their products in Turkey. This local Amazon platform is looking to expand product selections for Turkish customers. If you are considering becoming a seller on Amazon.com.tr, there are a few things to note.
Firstly, offered products need to be following the compliance and legal requirements for products sellable in Turkey. You may also be required to provide two years warranty and to provide after-sale services for offered products.
Secondly, you need to be a registered legal entity in any Chamber of Commerce in Turkey with a Turkish Tax ID number or an agreement with a distributor with a registered legal entity in any Chamber of Commerce in Turkey.
